Seasoning steel
To help maintain your steel for life, you should season it from time to time. Keeping it seasoned will keep food from sticking to it and from rusting. You can use various types of oil to do this such as canola, vegetable or flaxseed. The recommended type of oil to use is 100% Organic Flaxseed Oil (https://amzn.to/3TBTamn). It’s usually stored in a refrigerator at your locally grocery store in the health food section.
1. Clean your steel with soap and warm water. Make sure your steel is completely dry before you move onto the next step.
2. Shake the flaxseed oil bottle well. Using a paper towel apply a very thin layer coating the entire steel. With another clean paper towel wipe it down so you don’t see any shine on it. The steel will absorb the oil into it even if it looks like nothing is on it.
3. Place the coated steel in the oven and set the oven to bake at 400F for 1 hour. After the hour turn off the oven but don’t open the oven door let it cool for 2-3 hours. Caution: Steel remains hot for a long time.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3. Don’t apply thicker coats of flaxseed oil to speed this up. Make sure you apply a very thin layer each time. Two coats should be good enough to cover the entire steel. It will have a dark golden brown finish. You can do more coats if you like.
